Rest
Who loves naps? Do you have a favourite place to curl up for a quick cat nap, like our cat Harry? The piano bench is one of his many napping spots.
Do you feel that too often we neglect our rest? Cats may have the right idea.
They play when they want to play, eat when they can (which is either all the time or dependent on a regular schedule, however they’ve been trained) and rest all the time. They don’t neglect their rest. That must be why they’ve got so much energy for zoomies and play.
We, on the other hand, are often so busy running from one activity to another, whether its work, family commitments, going to the gym (or I’ve heard people do this …) and we neglect our rest.
My favourite verse from the past few years has been Matthew 11:28-30 (NLT):
“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
Every time I feel worn down or overworked, I read this, and it lightens my spirit. How much are we striving? And for what reasons?
I’ve accomplished a lot in the past couple of years, but I’ve also found a place of rest.
We’re none of us going through life on our own, and we don’t have to own every burden that comes our way. Lay it down, and receive rest. I know I need to do that regularly as I feel the worries of the world, which only seem to be growing.
“You will find rest for your souls.” Amen!
How does reading this verse make you feel?
