Perception

light refracting through empty glass on a kitchen countertop

It's amazing how simple things become extraordinary if you take the time to look at them differently. I saw the sun's reflection through this glass of water on my countertop one day, and it's beauty stood out.

Our perception of things changes easily if we allow ourselves to see them in a new light.

What things are you struggling with seeing in a new light?

Are you feeling stuck in anything? A job, a relationship, or a rut? Take this time to step out of your regular routine and re-frame what is feeling stale or tired.

For example, if you’re feeling stuck at work. You may feel like you’ve got no other choice than to be there, although you’d rather be doing something — anything — else. (We’ve all been there!) Look at the options:

  • First remember to be thankful that at least you have an income, where many people are struggling and don’t have a job. Starting by counting our blessings is a good way to shift our perspective

  • Look at professional development opportunities — is there a way you can learn a new skill or upgrade to a better job at your current company / organization?

  • Consider other educational opportunities. Would you like a complete shift, like moving from a retail job to becoming a skilled trade apprentice, like an electrician, plumber, or carpenter? Or go back to school and learn something completely different, like project management, nursing, or computer science? Look at local colleges and universities, starting with their Continuing Education offerings — those are a great way to “try before you buy” and make a big change.

  • Are you close to retiring and want to move down to part-time work? Maybe there’s an option to do that at your current organization, or somewhere in your neighbourhood that you’ve always wanted to work.

  • Is there a side-hustle you’d like to try? Like baking cookies, making arts/crafts, or teaching ESL?

There are always opportunities if we choose to look for them. And when in doubt, ask someone.

Matthew 7:7 NLT “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.”

As long as we ask, we have a chance to move forward. Even if we’re stuck with our current perception of our life, asking a friend or family member will often put a different light on it, and give us a new way of looking at what we’re seeing as mundane.

Just like the light through the glass of water.

Simple becomes sublime if we’re willing to change our perception.

Have a great day!
