What’s with the bee in your logo?

That’s an excellent question, and I wondered when someone would ask.

No, I don’t sell honey or any products with beeswax in them, although those are some of my favourite things. I LOVE honey! I am a recovering sugar-aholic but what I will allow myself is to have a little honey in my tea or on toast. Raw honey has wonderful health properties other than simply the sugar aspect. But I digress.

Why choose a bee for my artists logo?

I heard a story years ago when I was selling cosmetics for Mary Kay (yes, I fell in with more than one multi-level marketing system over the years. I don’t even wear makeup — what was I thinking?) The women were all amazing and very kind. One of the pins you could earn was a bumble bee. Again, what do bees have to do with cosmetics? Nothing. The bee was a symbol of what was possible. The story was shared that it is aerodynamically impossible for a bumble-bee to fly; the weight of its body is too heavy for the size of its wings to fly. But still it flies — because no one ever told it that it couldn’t.

So all we have to do when we’re facing something that seems difficult or impossible odds is to believe that we can, just like the bumble bee, and we will succeed.

Or should I say bee-lieve??

(Oh come on, I couldn’t resist that pun! It was too sweet.) Okay, I’ll stop now.

So when it came time for me to make a logo for myself, I was stuck. What could I choose? I was looking at different art media symbols, like potters wheels or vases, paintbrushes or pencils, but they all seemed to limiting. And I still didn’t know what kind of artist I wanted to be (recalling that I forgot about writing when I was setting up my logo.)

Then this story came back to mind. What I was doing was going to involve a lot of mind work, telling myself that

I can do things

instead of thinking I couldn’t, so what would be the best reminder? A bumble bee. So here we are. The artist and author with a bee in her logo.

Until next time, keep on trying and remember to “bee-lieve” in yourself.
